How Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) help make more environmentally conscious choices.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are similar to nutrition labels found on food products. In addition to detailed information about ingredients and how the product is made, EPDs also show its environmental impact throughout its lifetime. This information helps you compare and choose the more eco-friendly option.
An EPD is a verified document detailing a product’s environmental impact throughout its entire lifecycle—from extracting raw materials, manufacturing, shipping, maintenance, to disposing of end-of-life products. It includes data on materials, energy use, emissions, and pollution, allowing easy, standardized product comparisons.
With rows of data and acronyms, EPDs can initially seem overwhelming, but with some practice, it’s easy to find key information. The most important figure is the product’s overall carbon footprint.
EPDs are public documents that can be found in various EPD registers online. Unlike with food, EPDs are not mandatory, and many manufacturers have yet to adopt them as standard. Despite being recognised as an essential tool to help promote sustainable choices, they are currently not widespread within our industry.
Figgjo is the first company in the world to apply for a porcelain EPD and will continue adding products with this standard in the future.
